MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE CENTER
IDEA
Bella's Room was the idea of Bella Trevino, a Senior at Veteran's Memorial High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. After suffering from panic attacks after starting high school, Bella knew there needed to be a space for students at school to help them cope. Having missed days to deal with depression and anxiety in her freshman and sophomore years, Bella knew something more should be done. Bella contacted her school principal, Mr. Scott Walker and he was immediately on board, offering a room that had not been utilized. Working together, Bella, Mr. Walker, Asst. Principal Tamara Ritchie and Counselor Sarah Baumgartner designed the room.
PURPOSE
Bella's Room was created as a pilot program at Veterans Memorial High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. Bella's Room is designed to help students struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, and other mental health issues. This room offers students a private place and resources to deal with emotions that happen during school hours. By giving students the time they need to gather their thoughts in a safe and calm environment, students are now able to return to school without losing a day of instruction. Because each student is unique, the room offers a variety of tools for students to use, including aroma, sensory and educational therapies.
EDUCATION
Bella's Room offers students an opportunity to deal with their emotions in a safe, non-judgmental space while providing educational tools to create a better environment at school and home. The room is intentional in its design, feeling more like a home than a school setting. Every element in the room was designed by school counselors in an effort for students to re-focus themselves. Mental health education resources are strategically placed throughout the room to help students deal with emotions while teaching them coping techniques to use at home and in the future.
